The inaugural meeting of the Guernsey Letter Writers Society took place on Wednesday evening, 6th September 2017, down in Trinity Centre. Nine people gathered to celebrate the launch and put pen to paper.
During our “Show & Mail” part of the evening Jessica shared a passage from the introduction to Messages from the Sea as well as a card from her penpal in Texas who sent a wonderful collection of paper ephemera for the group to use.
Emma B suggested that a selection of postage stamps be made available at future meetings for members to purchase and Jessica will arrange this ready for next months gathering.
Adie asked the all important question that most letter writers ask at the start of their journey, “How do you get started?” Links to pen pal forums can be found on under the Links section of the website, but the Letter Writers Alliance and Postcrossing were recommended as the best places to start. Jessica is also hoping to make connections with other letter writing clubs around the world so as to match members with pen pals and conversations have already been started with The CLE Letter Writers Club, in Cleveland, Ohio.
The venue predicament was also discussed and as most members prefer an evening gathering we will at present continue to meet on the 1st Wednesday evening of each month, downstairs in Trinity Centre.
As for the stats, a total of 22 letters were written and sent out the following day via Box No. 95 opposite the Rue du Douit du Moulin at Rocquaine.
