{Minutes of Meeting} July 2018

Minutes of Meeting July 2018 | The Open Home

It was another great turn out for July’s letter writing social, with 9 members carving out time to put pen to paper.

Jessica opened the meeting with a reading from a letter she received from one of her very own pen pals, a short but witty excerpt regarding the neighbours elderly dog!

There was lots to share during the Show & Mail part of the evening this month.

Tiff shared about a postcard exchange that is happening between the Guille Allez Library and Plymouth Library in Massachusetts, USA who are celebrating the launch of The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society movie. They’d welcome postcards from anyone who wants to get involved. To take part you simply fill in a postcard or two with family stories from the occupation or stories from current day life in Guernsey and drop thm off at the Guille Allez Library by the end of July.

Elaine shared a sweet story about an unknown and incredibly kind postman who on recognising her Father’s pet name on some accidentally unaddressed postcards, stuffed them in an envelope and forwarded them on himself! Best. Postie. Ever!

And finally Jessica shared some parcel packaging that had not only been painted beautifully by a friend, but included some vintage wax seals, the seals of which had belonged to her grandfather-in-law who went missing in action during World War One.

In total 17 pieces of mail were sent out this month to 9 different countries, including our ever first piece of mail to Japan!

The pretty postbox used was Box No. 42 on Rue du Putron, not far from the cliff path to Fermain Bay. Marike may be new to the island but she already has a an impressive knowledge of postboxes, bagging her second win of the the free stamp – congratulations!
